How an Alkaline Detox Can Optimize Your Health

Over this past weekend during a casual conversation, I was asked if raw kale is bad for you.  To give you a bit of context, a friend read that raw kale was bad, and that you should be cooking it before consuming.

It piqued my interest because, for one, I juice with kale every morning and two, I wanted to find out if there was new emerging research proving the reason for this.

I did some research and found all kinds of articles claiming that raw leafy greens can cause endocrine disruption and toxic burden, and potentially cause gout in certain patients.

I then went deeper and looked into medical research on this topic, and like anything else, found a plethora of information that was all over the map.

Not one single study I found had a direct cause and effect. Instead, the assumption was derived from extrapolated facts that can be misleading.

Then I thought to myself, not everyone who reads on the web can triangulate this information to make an informed decision.

So today, I want to talk to you about toxins and their impact on our health. I also want to discuss how an Alkaline Detox can help reduce your toxic burden.

I can tell you right now, raw kale is not the enemy.

Are We Really What We Eat?

We are much more than what we eat.  We are what we eat, drink, breathe, touch, think……AND what we can’t eliminate.

If this is true, then what we are includes the toxins that our bodies can’t eliminate.

Here’s a scary truth:  10% of you have toxic organic compounds in your body that impact your health.  And EVERYONE has 53 different carcinogens in them, according to the EWG (Environmental Working Group). In fact, kids between 6-11 have the highest amounts in their bodies.

This is a serious problem in light of today’s epidemic of autoimmune and neurogenic conditions in both adults and kids.

Toxic Burden

Over the last 19 years, I’ve been researching and studying toxic burden and its health impact.  I’m particularly passionate about finding answers, and more importantly, finding solutions to living successfully with Lupus.

As a patient with a chronic condition, I’ve had my share of toxic burden due to pharmacological interventions.

The conventional medical system didn’t offer me much in the way of undoing the damage inflicted by such toxic pharma substances.

Rather, they continually claimed that the benefits outweigh the risks.

So I understand first hand what toxic burden means for my body and my quality of life.  I’ve had to create health for myself.

The Problem

Toxic Potency x Cumulative Exposure x Susceptibility = Disease Risk

So What Are Toxins?

Toxins are found all around us: in radiation, stress, lifestyle, infections, drugs, air pollutants, and diet.

We are finding though that there is great individual tolerance to toxicity and its impact.

Your genes determine your susceptibility.  This explains why some people have low tolerances for certain medications and become hyper sensitive to various environmental toxins and/or stimulants, while others are iron clad to those sensitivities.

For example, you’ve all had friends or family members who are sensitive to perfume.

According to Dr. Frumkin, the director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health, we as a nation are very toxic.

This is based on toxic load measuring biological medium (blood, urine, hair, nails, stool, and fat tissue).  He explains that this biomonitoring of toxins is considered the most relevant assessment of exposure because it measures the amount of toxins that actually gets into people’s bodies.

The unfortunate truth is that we are all exposed to synthetic pollutants in drinking water, air, food supply, and consumer products, such as lotions and shampoos.

Remember what I said earlier about cumulative exposure as part of the disease risk equation?  This is the problem.  This exposure can alter our genes and trigger the disease process.

Again, what we don’t eliminate stays with us.

What is Detoxification?

Detoxification is essentially taking a fat soluble compound and making it water soluble in order to eliminate it from our body.

Although, in our bodies, it’s much more complex than that.  Such transformative metabolic processes require many enzymes.

Enzymes are biological substrates responsible for accelerating and catalyzing chemical reactions in the body.  Most importantly, enzymes require nutrients to work–nutrients that many of us don’t have readily available.

This complex process not only involves nutrients, but because the transformation of toxic compounds produces lots of free radicals, we need to supply our body with an abundance of anti-oxidants to sequester the free radicals and prevent them from damaging our DNA.

So when someone tells you about a juice detox, or your doctor tells you that detox is a waste of time and you should drink water to flush out toxins, you now can make an informed decision for yourself, as there is a lot they don’t understand regarding this complex process.

Some toxins are water soluble, but most are fat soluble, so they can’t exit the body without transforming their compounds from fat soluble to water soluble.

The Solution–An Alkaline Detox

I wish I could confidently tell you that you can detox with only food.

But you need lots of bioavailable nutrients to drive and support the metabolic pathways to ensure safe elimination of accumulated toxins.  Many times, people cannot fully obtain this amount of nutrients from food alone, therefore, supplements are necessary.
